Graduate Seminar Room South West Engineering Building East Campus WITS University Thursday 21st of October 2009 14h00 and 18h00
We would like to invite you to a round-table conversation on October 21st to examine the public debate of recent weeks which saw a threat to self determination, gender identity, disrespect of ones privacy, on the one hand, and the disguise of racism, stardom and commodification behind patriotism, on the other hand.
Both within our borders and internationally, the debate on sex-testing and the reinforcement of binary sex and gender norms has never seen such publicity. Yet very little on the substance and subjects has been echoed by mainstream media in particular.
We would like to deepen our understandings of the interconnectedness of the above mentioned issues and their implications for advancing or at least safeguarding individual and collective rights. We also want to collectively explore ways forward, including how to intervene in these developments with greater impact.
We are a collective within the School of Social Science at Wits University who together with activists in different social movements, feel there is a need for feminists, gender activists and other progressive people to come together on October 21st a first exchange.
We will soon circulate a draft agenda and a synthesis of some of the key issues and questions that have been positioned as soon as possible. We are sorry that we do not have any funding to support travel costs for this initial meeting and hope that this does not hinder your participation.
Please indicate via email if you are interested in participating and are able to make the 21st of October: RSVP xxwhyforum@gmail.com
